First Seminar on "BIM Street" in Darmstadt

Together with Prof. Marek Salamak from the Silesian Technical University and Roland Degelmann, head of the Digitization Department at the Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Construction and Transport, the experts from HELLER Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH discussed the opportunities and risks associated with the use of BIM methods in road maintenance management. Of particular interest was defining the term Building Information Modeling. Often only the use of universal, interdisciplinary data models for planning, construction and operation is referred to. But BIM is much more: It stands in particular for the management of information assets and thus in close context to the organization of processes. In the road sector, the interdisciplinary storage and use of data with the introduction of the Road Information Banks (SIB) has been a daily practice for over 30 years. With the Object Catalogue for Roads and Transportation (OKSTRA), there is also a comprehensive standard in Germany covering all areas from road design and existing documentation to the recording of traffic data. Professor Salamak was impressed by the way the existing models are already being used for maintenance management in Germany. Roland Degelmann called on the service providers to support their administrative partners even more in the digitalization of processes in the future.
The seminar, which took place on 28 June 2018 at the historic castle of Darmstadt, is the start of further interdisciplinary exchange on the subject of Building Information Modeling. A big thank you goes to Dr. Kaluza and his colleagues from the German Poland Institute for their active support of the international event.
