Mobile application for the management of damaged areas now available on the App Store

On June 14th 2016, HELLER Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH released their first app on iTunes. This demand-based application program enables the user to immediately record damages on federal highways, state roads and district roads. The app is already used by the road authorities of the administrative districts of Esslingen and Göppingen who took an active part in the developmental process.

The new app is optimized for Apple iPhone and geared to the needs of the customers by HELLER. The expert in maintenance management advised both administrative districts during the processes of road monitoring and assessment (ZEB) of district roads. “This detailed monitoring however only takes place every four years”, reported Gregor Karzelek, manager of software development at HELLER. “To being able to visualize damages outside of this period, our client asked for an adequate solution.” HELLER consulted with the client and representatives of road authorities and road maintenance depots in order to determine the exact requirements of the user interface.

Simple handling

On their daily tours, road maintenance managers are able to record damages with their smartphones. The GPS coordinate and the section of road are calculated automatically. Road maintenance managers can then select the type of damage and record the affected area in square meters. Comments and pictures can be added if desired, and the responsible authority can be defined so that they will receive an e-mail. Within seconds, all the data is collected, saved and available for all registered users. The next step allows to update the status and the priority if necessary. “A user-friendly handling was our primary objective”, explained Gregor Karzelek. “The app should be simple and easy to understand to save time during damage assessment.”

Moreover, no internet connection is needed to use the app. At first the collected data is stored in the cache of the mobile device and synchronized with the server later on. Recorded damages are also transmitted to the online system OnKo of HELLER. (und bilden für den Nutzer dort in Echtzeit ein breiteres Bild ab)

The developed app can be customized to individual needs and processes of the user.
