VERA - Web application for automatic traffic counting

VERA supports the entire process of automatic traffic counting. From the collection to the management, visualization and evaluation of traffic data - everything is combined in one software.

The open source application was developed to support traffic monitoring and has been used since this year not only in Germany but also in Poland.

Advantages at a glance

  • Central management and maintainance of the directory of counting points
  • Visualization of counting points on maps and in tables
  • Fast evaluation of traffic data
  • Automatic generation of schedules for the counting devices
  • Daily monitoring of the measurements

Traffic monitoring

Regular traffic censuses are indispensable to be able to evaluate the traffic load and development. However, the majority of traffic censuses are carried out manually and involve a lot of personnel and high costs. For this reason, an alternative method was developed to automate traffic counting.

The so-called traffic monitoring method, which was introduced for the first time in 2010, uses mobile counting devices that are placed at the roadside and use radar technology to record all passing vehicles. These temporarily installed counting points are not only ideal for complementing nationwide traffic censuses, but can also be used to measure speeds or the load on main roads through towns, for example.

Counting devices

For automatic traffic counts, mobile radars are used which are integrated into a reflector post or a box. They can be used flexibly and are ideally suited for recording traffic on roads with low traffic volumes, such as state and district roads.

The post devices are used on roads outside urban areas and are installed at the roadside instead of a conventional reflector post. In cities and towns, on the other hand, box-type devices are used, which are attached to traffic signs.

Both types of counting devices can distinguish 8+1 vehicle classes by measuring the vehicle length, axle distances and noise level. This allows trucks, buses, cars and motorcycles to be distinguished almost free of errors. The devices are equipped with GPS and GSM and send all collected data once a day as single vehicle data to VERA.
